Homemade Wedding: Inspiration

Wedding inspiration. (Photos and craft projects found on Once Wed.)

Hi, friends. 5 more days until matrimony. Crazy!

Over the last few months, I've pillaged the depths of the Internet, in search of wedding inspiration. Here's a collection of ideas that have inspired these last few weeks of crafting. Nerd Alert: When we pictured what our wedding would look like, the first thing that came to mind was Bilbo's birthday party in the beginning of The Lord of the Rings. Shhh, secret. With that scene playing in my head, fused with the natural backdrop of Blackacre, I managed to build a nice little collection of bookmarked photos, tutorials, and Etsy pages.

Be warned, wedding blogland can be a frightening place - the secret is to stay realistic, keep your budget in check, and stay true to what fits your personality. Just 'cause you have a wimpy decoration budget, doesn't mean you can't pull off a pretty, unique and thoughtfully designed event. It does, however, call for a bit of elbow grease, careful planning and lots of help. (More on that later.)

When your wedding day draws near, you also have to be prepared to surrender. If you're like me, it's impossible to complete every elaborate project your mind dreams up, nor is it really necessary. (Re: DIY Reality Check) In the end, I decided to forgo a few projects that I loved, but either didn't fit our woodsy-picnic vibe, or the overall effect wasn't worth the effort. Believe me, it's for the best. Like Coco Chanel said, "When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on." I think that speaks for wedding decor too. Less is best. I set a goal to be finished with all of the projects a week before the wedding, so that I can spend these last days relaxing, doing girly things and spending time with Kurt. Letting go is hard. Kurt can attest to this; I struggled. But today is Monday, I have a whole craft-free week ahead of me. I am proud of what I've accomplished and relieved to be finished! Whew.

  1. Bilbo's birthday party sounds a lot like my dream EVERYTHING celebration.
It sounds like you've done a great job. And you're right, in the end there were so many little things that I poured hours into, that didn't even matter. I've noticed that with baby showers, and any other gathering I've tried to get together. I can't wait to see all the details!

  2. fantastic post. such wonderful words, and those photos are so lovely.

    enjoy your day!

  4. Aura, I remember the pictures from your wedding. They were so beautiful! That fennec fox is so out of control cute, I can't stand it.

    Thanks, Allison!
