Honeymoon!

Sunset at Villa Caletas I, originally uploaded by Erik Holmberg.

We've decided to honeymoon in Costa Rica next May. Just booked our flight! I'm incredibly excited, I just can't stand it.

There will be monkeys and volcanoes and waterfalls! Tree houses, beaches and sea turtles! Finally, a tropical destination is on our horizon.

Has anyone ever been? I'd love to hear all about it. Suggestions are most welcome, please and thanks.

  1. That's awesome! I LOVED Costa Rica. That was one of my favorite trips ever.

I definitely recommend spending some time in the Monteverde cloud forest area. There's a nice butterfly farm there, and there are also several places that do zip-lines and "walkway through the trees" tours, where you walk around on suspended bridges. Fun!

I also really liked Manuel Antonio Park - gorgeous beaches, and we saw so many monkeys and iguanas! Plus, a sloth!

We went to Poas Volcano, which is worth seeing if it's not too far out of your way.

San Jose is pretty meh. The Teatro Nacional is neat, and there's a nice history museum. Otherwise, I would say spend as little time there as possible, just to fly in and out. Unless you're flying into Liberia, in which case you'll avoid the capital altogether.

You will have so, so much fun. It's such a gorgeous country, with really friendly, welcoming people. I would go back in a heartbeat!

  4. i studied at the universidad de costa rica (in san jose) for a year. i loved every minute of being there. nosara is a really nice area, as well as santa teresa. steer clear of jaco/hermosa. although, playa esterillos is pretty nice. the caribbean coast is interesting, but if you want long expansive beaches head to the pacific coast. also, montezuma is a neat little town, with some awesome waterfalls to jump around in! oh, so much to do in such a small country! have fun : )
