Labor Day Weekend

I'm currently mourning the death of a pretty hostile four-day weekend. There was the traditional sort of fun-having: dance party, cookout, trampoline, hiking, movie watching, eating lots! And then there was my own brand of fun-having: fermenting sour kraut, making lemon curd, baking focaccia bread, using our new food dehydrator to make homemade jerky and dehydrated tomatoes. Yeah!

On Friday, we party-hardied. Evidence.

On Saturday, we hosted our first cookout. We grilled Western Kentucky-style barbecued chicken legs, bacon-wrapped fontal stuffed dates and grilled vegetables. Let me tell you, the dates were the chronic. Kurt refers to them as delicious meat candy. Here's the recipe: Stuff a fresh date with a little piece of cheese (fontal), wrap in a slice of bacon, secure on a kebab skewer and grill (or bake) until bacon is toasty. I saw them over at Brown Eyed Baker. You can see them too. Go. Look! I also tried her recipe for lemon-limoncello cupcakes. They were also really great.

Some cookout pictures:

Brandy and I. So glad she came!

Kurt eating a bacon-wrapped sausage. Yes, the bacon wrapping got a little out of hand.

The throwing children game.

Cheri and Harold.

!!!

How was everyone's long weekend? I feel like I successfully crammed in the last bout of summer activities before it gets too cold. Now I can focus on planning fall fun-having, like birthday partying, apple picking, sweater wearing, and pumpkin carving. I love fall.

  3. I'm sorry we couldn't make it, but thanks for inviting us! We had our own fun-filled agenda over the weekend. I hope we can see you guys again sometime soon though.

You should also try those dates with goat cheese, and while you're grilling them, baste the bacon with fig jam. They're like crack!
